Farming in Srilanka

            Srilanka is an agricultural country .Farming is the main industry .Farmers grow paddy and other grains such as Kurakkan.,green gram ,corn etc. paddy is the most commonly grown grain  in our country .Rice is our staple food. 

             In the past the farmers did not use machine .They used  buffaloes to plough the fields .They helped each other.This was called athtam or " giving a hand" 

           Haversting paddy was an interesting  activity .They used buffaloes to thresh the paddy.Both men and women joine in to winnow the paddy. They stored paddy in " vee bissa" . 

           Farmers got water from the village tank for cultivation . The ancient king built many tanks .Some of them are Parakkram Samudrya , Kala weva .  Jaffna farmers got water from  " Adiya Linda" grown

        Now a bays  farmers used machine  &grown chemical fertilizers. They used tractors to ploug the field & thresh the paddy .They used chemical  pesticides but they are harmful to our helth..Now many people perfer orgnic food grown by natural methods.
